Sommières - Medieval Festival

The Medieval Festival  24 th - 26 th may

The Middle Ages have molded Sommières from an architectural and economic point of view.

Thanks to its strategic position, Sommières is situated between the Cévennes mountains and the coast and between Montpellier and Nîmes. Very early, these crossroads meant that the city  became an economic hub  and a meeting point.

Nowadays, the town has kept this principal function since the communication axis has not changed with the passing years.

This fair which celebrates the medieval period every year in spring time also launches the summer season and contributes to the influence of our city far beyond the immediate area.

The medieval fair evokes the great fairs of yesteryear.

Since the 12th century, fairs and markets have been the opportunity for festive meetings where  locals and visitors from far away with different cultures and backgrounds mingle.

The exhibitions, old crafts and  artists of yesterday and today allow revelers to make the link between the Middle Ages and the present time.

Sommières aims for a pleasant fair for familiesLa parade des soldats

This event, managed by enthusiasts of medieval fair and events, show off the specially chosen participants particular skills, in a convivial atmosphere.

There is a huge investment particularly at the castle where civil and military camps are established. There are also activities for children like jousting.

Smiths, storytellers, beggars and travelling acrobats are here to entertain and delight people, without forgetting the fancy dress parade, the musicians, the medieval market.

All the activities organized in town (market place, la rue Général Bruyère and l'esplanade) are free except at the castle where a charge is levied.
