The Region - Interesting places

The perfect starting point : Sommières is an ideal spot from which to start touring the Gard region. Discover the beaches, the Cévennes mountains and the many places of interest in the area.

 

The Pont du Gard  this bridge, a showpiece of Roman architecture, is the only one of its kind in the world.

 

Anduze  here at the gate to the Cévennes mountains you can take a picturesque journey on the old-fashioned steam train and visit the renowned Prafrance Bamboo park.

 

Nîmes a city where one can admire both the architectural treasures from the time of the Roman occupation as well as modern buildings.

 

The village of Saint Guilhem le Désert,  a village near the Hérault River gorge, built around the Gellone Abbey. It has kept its medieval atmophere. It is listed as one of the 32 Grand Sites de France.

 

Avignon has the biggest gothic palace in the world and is well known for its ancient bridge.

 

Arles is a must for anyone who wants to discover Roman art as well as the medieval history of the region.

 

Very Interesting places

The Wooden Forks
The inhabitants of the picturesque medieval township of Sauve have a curious tale to tell : "Thanks to a special skill we've had here for some 700 years pichforks grow in our fields". It has been a speciality of Sauve since, at least, the 11th century, and, perhaps,even the 7th century with the invasion of the Saracens. Nettle trees are grown in such a way as to produce three prongs, which, after being worked on, are used to make wooden forks. As many as 120 000 forks used to be made every year and were greatly sought after because they were much less dangerous for animals.

The site of Ambrussum, with its Roman ruins,  lies on the Via Domitia. Only one arch remains from a total of eleven, of the Roman bridge  which crossed the Vidourle at this point. You can visit the interesting museum.

 

Saint Laurent le Minier A small village curled up in the Vis River gorge, a magical setting with a number of waterfalls.

 

Le Pic Saint Loup An ideal spot to practice rambling, serious hiking, rock-climbing while discovering the exceptional natural site.

Saint Quentin la Poterie known for its remarkable architecture and its long tradition of pottery-making.
